Masaka resident district commissioner Protazio Tugurihwayo has insisted that Mayor Tibyasa Matovu, though a Democratic Party diehard, must be recognised as the democratically elected Movement chairman in the Municipality.
Tugurihwayo was on Tuesday addressing a press conference at his office. This was in reaction to accusations from members of the district Movement Committee that he had been told to exclude the mayor from the National Conference delegates but he refused.
“The minister himself (Kezimbira Miyingo) tried to resist the mayor’s attendance and told me to delete his name from the official list but I refused because he (Tibyasa) was legally elected as the Movement chairman,” he said.
Some Movement leaders in Masaka have since attacked Tugurihwayo saying he was sidelining the Movement by dealing too closely with DP supporters.
They said Tibyasa was not supposed to attend the conference because he had been de-campaigning the Movement and had never participated in its activities since he was elected.
They said Tibyasa attended the conference on the first day and left Kyankwanzi because he was not interested in Movement affairs.
“I told them that Tibyasa was elected under the Movement system, and must be recognised as a Movement chairman, not as a DP,” he said. He said that it would be against the law, and the mayor would sue him if he denied him his right to his right to attend the meeting. Ends
