NATIONAL Council of Sports (NCS) is confident adequate precautionary measures are in place for a peaceful Uganda Amateur Athletics Federation (UAAF) election at Lugogo today.
“We are looking forward to an orderly and peaceful election,” said acting NCS general secretary John Odyek, dismissing fears of a repeat of the chaotic January 25 athletics assembly that failed to conclude.
The assurance comes barely a day after one of the presidential candidates Dan Tamwesigire accused NCS of favouring his opponent Elijah Mushemeza.
But, according to Odyek, the election that will have two voters from each of the 68 registered districts and municipalities, has streamlining measures that are being misinterpreted as restrictive by some delegates.
“All we want, is to establish when each of the delegates was elected in their respective constituencies,” explained Odyek.
This will be yet another of several attempts to bring sanity in a body that has for over two decades been torn in intrigue and corruption .
Sulaiman Habib, who took over from Mushemeza in 1998, is the outgoing chairman. He is one of the forces behind Mushemeza in a battle against former UAAF executives Faustin Kiwa and Beatrice Ayikoru for Tamwesigire.
