THE 6,627 people (828 households) who fled the Lord’s Resistance Army’s (LRA) recent incursions in Katakwi will begin receiving food and other relief supplies today in Soroti, state minister for disaster preparedness Christine Aporu said yesterday.

She said international and local donors had held a closed meeting in Kampala to pool resources for the emergency.

“There is a humanitarian problem in Katakwi. People are running from the peaceful sub-counties of Kuju, Kapelebyong, Obalanga, Orungo and Acowa.

“387 households (3,093 people) are living in six centres in Soroti county, while 441 households (3,511 people) are in 12 centres in Soroti municipality,” she said.

She said the Government is committed to restoring security in Teso.

“The LRA have disrupted our school programmes but the Government will calm the situation,” said Aporu.

Hungry mothers and children fleeing from the rebels have been a common site on major roads linking Soroti and Katakwi districts.

“We have received thousands at the various centres. More have continued to come but the number could be greater as there are those who have been absorbed by their relatives and friends,” Soroti chief administrative officer George W. Omuge said.

Aporu said the World Food Programme, UNICEF, Red Cross, Save the Children and ADRA representatives attendeded the meeting.
