THE Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) has dispatched an assortment of household items to the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in Teso region.
The items, which include 400 jerrycans, 400 tarpaulins, 400 saucepans and 800 blankets, will be distributed to the most vulnerable people among the IDPs camped in Soroti municipality, according to a statement issued on Wednesday.
URCS’ support follows the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) attacks in Katakwi and Soroti districts, which have led to the displacement of thousands of people.
The statement said URSC would lead the distribution of relief supplies in the region under supervision of the district relief co-ordination team.
It added that 50 volunteers had been mobilised to distribute the relief and assist the IDPs in the construction of pit-latrines.
The URCS field staff and volunteers have been equipped with vehicles and radio communication systems to ease their work.
On Tuesday the state minister for disaster preparedness, Christine Aporu, said the 6,627 people who had fled the LRA incursions in Katakwi would begin receiving relief in Soroti on Wednesday.
This came after a closed meeting in Kampala with international and local donors to pool resources for the emergency.
UCRS, World Food Programme, UNICEF, Save the Children and ADRA representatives attended the meeting.
