MOSES Kipsiro failed to dip below 14 minutes but still finished the 5000 meters at the UAAF trials at Namboole yesterday with a smile.
Kipsiro won in 14 minutes 02 seconds in a race slowed by a very wet track following a mid-day downpour. The 5000m qualifying time for the All Africa Games is 13:30.00, and only Boniface Kiprop has run that fast so far.
“All I need now are a few more practice sessions on the track, and I will be well below 14 minutes,” said Kipsiro, who won by over 100 meters.
He also led a clean sweep of the top seven positions by runners from the Michael Ezra high altitude training camp. Isaac Kiprop and James Kibet followed him in 14:14.05 and 14:20.98 respectively.
The smartly clad Kapchorwa athletes had earlier also stolen the show in the 3000m with Phylis Chelangat sprinting to the tape in 9:37.13.
Margaret Nakintu, who recently hit the All Africa Games 3000m qualifying mark, made an impressive return from an acute ulcers attack by easily striding to victory in the 800m in two minutes 06 seconds.
This race had a dramatic battle for second position where fast rising Salome Apio beat more experienced Happy Mary Bacia. Apio clocked 2:11.00.
The competitors, many of whom were struggling to get to grips with the Namboole facilities, also had a chance to try out their skills at rare events like the steeplechase and 400m hurdles.
Businessman Ezra, sponsor of the qualifying meet at the modern Namboole stadium, also offered free lunch to all competitors.
