What A Week!

IT was a terrible week, when we woke up to the news that the Lord’s Resistance Army rebels abducted at least 80 schoolgirls from Lwala Girls Secondary School in Kaberamaido.

Thirteen out of the 80 students that were abducted by the LRA rebels from Lwala Girls Secondary School managed to escape and reached Tororo. May God have mercy on all the children that have been abducted.

The chaos at Kampala International University (KIU) has not gone unattended.

The National Council for Higher Education last week appointed a Visitation Committee to investigate the crisis at KIU and the general management of the institution.

The five-member committee headed by Prof. Michael Lejeune, the Vice Chancellor of Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi is also supposed to assess the ability of the private university to offer the current programmes.

As the investigations into KIU’s affairs continue, Kyambogo University will in the near future, have its own full autonomy.

The Ministry of Education and Sports asked Parliament to approve the registration of the university as a fully-fledged institution that can award its own degrees.

Currently, Kyambogo awards Makerere University degrees. In support of this recommendation, Kiddu Makubuya, the Education minister, told the parliamentary committee on social services, he said the university was registered and made a fully-fledged one because it meets the required standards. Good luck Kyambogo.

As many universities come onto the scene, hopefully there will be serious career guidance.

I have a feeling students apply for courses simply because they have money and do not think of the reality. What else would explain the expulsion of over 500 students who have been pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce (External) degree course.

These former students of Makerere University’s Nakawa Business School reportedly failed examinations while others failed to raise a cumulative Grade Point Average of two for two consecutive semesters.

There have always been reports of defilement and sexual harassment of students. This time round a female student from Kabojja Senior Secondary School took a step further. The 18-year-old girl gave her testimony before Richard Mafabi, the Buganda Road Court Magistrate, that her teacher, Jethro Tekka touched her bottom and breasts while in the school staff room, without her consent.

There is need to have more students come out and testify if there is going to be a change in the conduct of our teachers. Well done dear girl.
