THE Conservative Party (CP) has welcomed US President George W Bush’s visit and asked the US embassy to ask Bush to speak to Parliament and the opposition political parties.

CP, in a statement copied to the embassy, has also proposed that Bush pushes for talks between President Yoweri Museveni and LRA rebel chief Joseph Kony outside Uganda and that the US sponsors the talks.

Addressing reporters on Thursday at Fairway Hotel, CP secretary general Ken Lukyamuzi said out of the four hours Bush will spend here, he can spare an hour to speak to Parliament and another 30 minutes to the opposition political parties.

“Much as the American President will be here for only four hours, CP in appreciation of the good relations which exist between Uganda and the US, propose that Bush addresses the Ugandan Parliament for at least 30 minutes,” a statement that Lukyamuzi read out to journalists said.

“He should also meet the leaders of Uganda’s political parties for some 30 minutes. How can a president of a great nation like America visit a suffering country and not speak to the representatives of the people?” Lukyamuzi asked.

CP has also called on Bush to ask President Museveni to open political space without conditions.

“America knows that the Movement is a dictatorship. It should be told that the days of domination are over not only in the US but in Uganda as well.”

Lukyamuzi also commented about his recent dramatic disappearance from a rally he had organised.

“The point is that the Military Police had come for me because they aimed their guns at me. I did not want to take risks as you know I have been through a lot,” he said.

He claimed the Government was deliberately looking for him.
