Ministry set for Swahili
KAMPALA — The acting assistant commissioner for primary education in the ministry of education and sports, Mohammed Bulondo, recently said the Government should put emphasis on the teaching of Kiswahili in schools as a way of developing the Kiswahili culture and for easy communication with neighbouring countries like Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania. This was at a workshop for primary teachers.

Man charged
KAMPALA — A Korean factory manager at Hwan Sung Ltd, who allegedly boxed an employee, was yesterday charged with common assault. K.S. Kim, 37, appeared before Nakawa Court Grade One Magistrate Namata Nsibambi. He denied the charge and was released on a cash bail of sh200,000. His sureties were bonded at sh0.5m.

Market shut
MBARARA — The authorities have closed down Kamwema monthly market for cattle and livestock products following the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Endiizi sub-county, Bukanga. District veterinary officer Dr. John Lewis Barigye on Thursday said they had imposed a quarantine on the movement of animals and the selling of livestock products in Endiizi near the Tanzanian border, until further notice.

ARUA — A Uganda Revenue Authority official in charge of tax collection in West Nile region, Peter Birakwate, has been remanded allegedly for fraud. Birakwate was arrested after businessmen complained of alleged disparities in their tax invoices, the district Police commander, William Onziga, said yesterday.

Two held

KAMPALA — A High Court official and her colleague were recently remanded to Luzira Prison over conning Ridar Hotel, Mukono, of sh1.5m. They claimed it was required by Lady Justice Julia Ssebutinde to dismiss a civil case against the hotel. Ridar Hotel had reportedly been sued for breach of contract by a city engineer, Dan Kiiza. Ruth Guyidde and Wilfred Kawere denied the charges.
