CLUB Silk celebrated their ninth anniversary last Saturday and Elvis Sekyanzi and marketing honcho Andrew Kaffoko, had the usual knack for re-inventing this annual bash.

The dress code this time was beach wear, with an emphasis on straw hats. As usual, the largest turn-up was the campus babes who required no dress code to go full throttle on sexy outfits. With the skimpy nature of female beach apparel on show, there was a lot of brown fresh to feast one’s eyes on. And we loved every inch of it!(Who wouldn’t. Even the erstwhile former Army Commander Maj. Gen. James Kazini was in the house).

The bouncers looked different too. Forget their tight sweat shirts ominously revealing jutting biceps. This time, they wore flamboyant beach shirts and straw hats creating a a pleasantly relaxed atmosphere. Even when they groped your groin with their screaming metal detectors going over every inch of your body, somehow, one managed to keep a straight face.

The queue stretched way past the New Vision offices. Which meant that inside (the sh5,000 raise in entrance fee notwithstanding), was more than just a full house. I could feel perspiration drip down my shirt, but the crowd of revellers, in their early twenties, did not seem to mind.

The music was a fusion of everything from R&B, to African sounds, to Ugandan music, with the highlight of the night being a performance by local artists. Up in Silk Royale, was Kawesa, the new-kid-on-the-block Morris Kirya and dance hall luminary Bebe Cool.

The jam session was preceded by an illustrious cake-cutting ceremony, with Maj. Gen. Kazini cutting the cake accompanied by Club Silk director, Elvis Sekyanzi, his wife Julie and father, Gordon Wavamunno.

An exhilarated Sekyanzi talked fondly of the ex-army chief, whom, for whom we were prompted to sing “For he’s is a jolly good fellow.” Kawesa then leaped into the arena and took it away with the not so familiar Yaye. This, apparently, is Kawesa’s latest offering, that has not yet been released. He sang with indulging passion, but never quite caught the crowd’s attention as he did with the dance song Hakuna Matata.

The excitement had not yet died down before crowd favourite Morris Kirya, with guitar in hand, did an acapella before performing Stop. Bebe Cool, who had alrperformed below in Club Silk, wowed the Silk Royale crowd with his hit Burn Dem Down and the Firebase Crew’s signature tune Funtula.

The floor was then cleared for the party. And party they did, until the wee hours of the morning.
