KYOGA Veritas FM, the radio station in Soroti that was recently closed allegedly for airing rebel messages, is seeking sh500m in damages from the State.
Hillary Nsambu reports that through Emoru and Company Advocates and Kampala Attorneys and Solicitors, Veritas claims that the decision to halt its activities and confiscation of its gadgets and personal belongings was arbitrary and unjustifiable.
The information state minister, Nsaba Buturo, reportedly told Parliament recently that the radio had been closed for indiscriminately broadcasting rebel messages.
The advocates, acting on the FM’s instructions, on Friday served the Attorney General (AG) a 45-day statutory notice of the radio’s intention to sue.
The radio seeks, among other things, the court’s declaration that the decision of Soroti resident district commissioner Edward Masiga and other state employees, including the Police, to arbitrarily close it contravened the law.
It also seeks special, general and punitive damages for wrongful closure of its business premises and illegal retention of its diverse property plus trespass.
