At least nine million children in Uganda aged between six and 15 are to be immunised in the October 2003 National Mass Immunisation campaign against measles. The exercise jointly funded by UNEPI and the Uganda government is cost about sh10b.

At a planning meeting for Kasese Catholic Diocese Social Services Hall in Kasese Town July 1, it was confirmed the exercise would run throughout the country between October 15 and 19 2003. Officials attended the meeting from UNEPI, the Ministry of Health headquarters in Kampala and Kasese district Health Team.

According to Dr. Peter Okwir, Kasese district director of Health Services, the exercise is aimed at immunising all the children who fall in the prescribed age bracket at the same time in order to halt the measles virus.

Quoting a Ministry of Health report, Dr. Okwir said that research had revealed that only 85% of the children immunised against measles are fully protected leaving 15% at risk.
