EZRA Track Team owner Michael Ezra has offered to sponsor five athletes and a coach to the Africa Junior Athletics Championships scheduled for July 30 to August 3 in Yaounde, Cameroon.
The lucky five junior athletes he nominated have been outstanding in the past two trials held at Mandela Stadium, Namboole. They are Raymond Otim (shot-put), Phylis Chelangat, Moses Kipsiro, Isaac Kiprop and James Kibet (5000m) and their coach Ruth Kyalisiima.
Uganda Amateur Athletics Federation (UAAF) chairman Dan Tamwesigire and secretary Beatrice Ayikoru said they had learnt of the offer but are awaiting an official communication from the Ezra Track Team. They said UAAF is also looking for tickets for three more athletes.
Ezra revealed the offer at a brief ceremony at Lugogo where he also donated five trophies and 200 T-shirts for the National Post Primary Athletics Championship in Masindi starting today.
Acting National Council of Sports (NCS) general secretary John Odyek, flanked by NCS member Chris Mugisa and Ezra Track Team board member Michael Kadodooba, received the trophies.
Top three finishers in each of the events will receive T-shirts.
The T-shirts bare the wording “Chase the Dream with Ezra”.
In April, Ezra made a similar offer towards the primary school version of the national competition. Ezra, is a former sprinter.
Meanwhile, New Vision has learnt that little-known John Surundu and UAAF organising secretary Faustin Kiwa are at the World Youth Athletics Championship that start today in Sherbrooke, Canada.
According to UAAF, the self-sponsored Kenya based sprinter was the best candidate after the Ezra camp objected to having Kipsiro and Kiplimo on the team.
UAAF said they forfeited one of the two tickets offered by the world athletics governing body because of failure to make entries in time.
“It is then that we opted for Surundu who had a full National Social Security Fund (NSSF) sponsorship,” Ayikoru said.
According to Ayikoru Surundu has an electronic 100m time of 11.25 seconds. He will also run the 200m.
