Lucky Dube, Africa’s biggest reggae star, known the world over for his energetic performances and uplifting lyrics, is once again coming to town on July 30 for a record fourth time for two concerts, thanks to a new production company called KT and Mogasun situated at Bat Valley Theatre. He will be accompanied by a 26- man crew, of which six will be a television production crew from Channel O, here to record his performance. Dube will hold his first concert at Nile Hotel Gardens, where revellers will pay sh20,000 at the gate and selected ticket vending points. On August 3, he will rock crowds at Nakivubo Stadium, where the entry charge is sh10,000.
According to Keith Kitungulu, one of the directors of KT and Mugasun Productions, Dube needs no introduction. “Lucky Dube first came in 1996, then returned in 1998 and 2000, and this is the fourth time, but still Ugandans have not had enough of him. That is why he still has the largest fan base in this country, ranging from young kids to grown ups.”
His stagecraft is equal to none. He is simply a live-wire act and his music has been pleasing to the ear since his first release in the 80s. This has always had the Ugandan audience firmly hooked.
His earlier visits aside, Kitungulu thinks Dube will still be refreshing for a lot of people because his innocuous fusion of focused rhythms and uncompromising production makes for a welcome relief compared to the over-fluffed sub-genres churned out by Ugandan artists.
“We have good Ugandan bands and musicians, but what most of them offer live on stage cannot be compared to Dube’s production. They are really going to see a reggae band in the spirit of great reggae bands,” Kitungulu says.
According to the promoter, this will be Lucky Dube’s last appearance in Uganda and he intends to make it memorable. So, he will offer over two hours of reggae mayhem.
As he rocks Kampala to its swampy core, the key ingredient will be the awesome sound. “We are flying in over 20,000 tons of equipment from abroad that will wow the crowd. The stage lighting will be spectacular as well.”
The icing on the cake, is that on all the gigs, Dube will please the crowd with material from his debut album through to the latest. He will also use the occasion to celebrate his impressive track record and longevity in this fickle music industry to launch his impressive new album titled The Other Side.
To make this Ugandan trip memorable, visits to Kasubi Tombs, the spectacular Bujagali Falls and a home for the mentally handicapped in Mengo have been lined up. For an audience starved of a real class act, Lucky Dube’s last Ugandan concert will be a welcome breather.
