LC5 attacks
PADER — District council chairman Yakobo Komakech has accused civil servants in the district of corruption and abuse of office. In aletter to the chief administrative officer and heads of department, Komakech cited misuse of government funds, absenteeism without proper reason, and demand for kick-back from contractors.

“I was away from the district due to illness but I returned to find a lot of nonsense being practiced here. We (council) shall get them one by one,” he said.

Prison full
GULU — The central prison is congested with 610 inmates. The officer in-charge, Patrick Masiga, said, “We now have 610 prisoners in Gulu Central Prison yet in normal circumstances, the prison is meant to accommodate only 250 prisoners.” He said 71 prisoners were transferred from Kitgum local government prison to the central prison on July 15. Masiga said 250 capital offenders had been committed and are waiting for High Court trial.

Arua gets
ARUA — The district whose industrial development has been hampered by lack of reliable electricity supply since independence has got a second factory. Arua Foam Industries, owned by Nile Coach Transport Group, has started manufacturing mattresses. The company boss, Ahmed Salim, said their production was pegged to market demand averaging 300 mattresses a day.

UNFPA aids
GULU — The United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) has donated five motorcycles and 40 bicycles to the Productive Adolescent Reproductive Life (PEARL) programme in the district. The district secretary for health, Joyce Laker, received the donation at the district council hall recently. She said Gulu had the highest rate of HIV infection in Uganda.

Stadium set
LIRA — The Central division has approved sh40m tfor the construction of the Akii-Bua stadium this year. The contribution was announced by the central division speaker, Aryono Ongom, at this years budget presentation recently.
