FIFTEEN Gravel roads in the suburbs of Kampala are to be tarmacked to ease traffic congestion in the city centre.

The roads, whose rehabilitation kicks off next month, are those recommended in the five-year Kampala Urban Traffic Improvement Plan (KUTIP).

They are Mutungo, Bukoto-Kisaasi roads in Nakawa Division, Hanlon, Namasole, St. Barnabas, Luwafu and Salaama roads in Makindye division, Lubiri Ring, Mwanga II, Musajja Alumbwa, Old Kampala and Mpabaana in Central Division.

Others are Wankulukuku Road in Lubaga division, Mambule, Kawempe-Ttula and Kalerwe-Ttula in Kawempe Division.

Bonnie Nsambu, the programme engineer of Nakivubo Channel Rehabilitation Programme recently said work on Mutungo and Mambule roads will start next month.

NCRP is the city department implementing the KUTIP project. Nsambu told The New Vision in an interview that Zzimwe Construction Company had been awarded a sh691m tender to tarmac the 2.7km Mutungo Road while Multiplex Ltd is to tarmac Mambule Road at sh485m.

He said, “The roads we are working on this year are first priorities in KUTIP. They were recommended for tarmac to help ease traffic in the city.”
