Grover Yogesh, the Chairman of Uganda Fish Processors and Exporters Association, has attributed Kenya and Tanzania’s higher fish production due to immature catch, while Uganda, still follows the relevant fishing regulations on Lake Victoria.

He said last week that Kenya and Tanzania should respect the regulations if the sector is to remain sustainable.

He said Kenya and Tanzania are the leading producers of young fish in East Africa, which are in demand in European markets but its illegal.

“According to the study by European consultants, Kenya’s fish exports increased by 25% and that of Uganda declined by 25%. This means that Kenya fishes indiscriminately,” he said.

Lake Victoria fishing regulations state that no processor should process Nile Perch shorter than 20 inches.
