GODFREY Nyakana and the rest of the pugilists in tomorrow’s fights at Nakivubo went through a thorough medical as per Uganda Professional Boxing Commission (UPBC) new health rules.
The medical certificates have already been handed to UPBC.
UPBC vice president Bbosa Kiyingi yesterday showed journalists the boxers’ HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B certificates at a joint press conference addressed by Nyakana and his Cameroonian opponent Dieddone Katonang Takou at Nakivubo Stadium.
The commission subjected local boxers to a medical in UPBC gazetted clinics while the foreigners came with what Kiyingi described as authentic certificates.
“UPBC is serious on healthy boxing and hygiene in the ring. Boxers must not share towels,” Kiyingi said. “It is a pre-requisite because our policy is to safeguard boxers’ health, we can’t compromise on that.”
Katonang (11-5-2-7kos) reiterated his promise to stretch Nyakana (30-3-1-20kos) the full distance in the super middleweight non-title contest. Nyakana is returning to the ring after five years.
Nyakana said: “I have been training for the last six months. I am smarter, wiser, faster, patient and more experienced. The punches will do the rest of the talking.”
Gobtex International is promoting the fight scheduled for Nakivubo stadium.

-Commonwealth silver medallist Joseph Lubega is one of 12 boxers that have been summoned to start non residential training with the Bombers squad.
The Boxer for the year 2002 will be among the athletes that will be fighting for a place on the final team for the Abuja games, Nigeria in October.
The full squad will be training in the mornings under national coach Dick Katende.
