STATE minister for health Capt. Mike Mukula (left) has joined the Arrow Group, a para-military force created in Teso, to fight LRA rebels who infiltrated the area recently.

Mukula, the MP for Soroti Municipality, was the centre of attraction at Parliamentary Building in Kampala yesterday when he turned up in army fatigues with a pistol and a bayonet hanging over his right hip. He said he was just from the frontline.

The Arrow Group comprises former soldiers, former fighters of the defunct Uganda People’s Army and Movement cadres. The group headed by ISO chief Elly Kayanja was recently armed to fight the rebels alongside the UPDF.

“I have humbled myself and taken up arms to protect our people. I have joined the Arrow Group and I am one of their leaders,” he told the press.

Mukula denied reports that Iteso in Katakwi district were hiring the rebels to look after their cattle. Third Division Commanding officer Col. Andrew Gutti was quoted as saying the rebels who were thrown into disarray from the battlefields, were being hired by civilians as herdsmen.

“People in Katakwi and all affected areas are aware of the dangers, and are working together to ensure the war is ended,” he said.

Mukula said one of Kony’s spiritual commanders, Commander Alter, had been killed days ago at Olwa in Kapelebyong. He said many of the Lwala Girls abducted by the rebels in Soroti had been rescued except for 12 who remain unaccounted for.

He said the Government was in control although the rebels still roamed the border.

He promised that Soroti, Katakwi and Kaberamaido would soon return to normal and schools would reopen.
