SECURITY officials have bust a racket of city muggers accused of grabbing mobile phones which they sell in Kenya and Rwanda.
Addressing a press conference at the Central Police Station (CPS) in Kampala on Wednesday, Police spokesman Asuman Mugenyi said they would contact their counterparts in both countries through Interpol “so that they zero down on other suspects.”
Hassan Odori Misi of Makindye, Sulaiman Madada Kimbugwe and Jackson Kateregga, a man the Police alleged had stolen more than 600 mobile phones, were arrested last Friday from Kisenyi, a city suburb.
Mugenyi said the fourth suspect, only identified as shobi, was being interrogated.
“One of the biggest problems we have been facing in the city is street crime where thugs have been mugging and snatching items like bags, jewellry, mobile phones and money from the public,” he said.
He cautioned the public against buying “classy used phones” at low prices, saying the police would arrest any one found in possession of a stolen phone.
The last three weeks have seen an upsurge in mobile phone thefts with an average of 70 reported stolen each week.
