WORKS, housing and communications minister John Nasasira has reassured the public that the World Bank will “within the next few days” release funds for the stalled Hoima Road project.

Speaking to The New Vision by phone last week, Nasasira said he was optimistic the outstanding issues would be resolved in less than two weeks.

“I will very soon announce the good news to the public about the release of the funds for the Hoima Road project. I will even invite people to witness the signing of the innovation agreement with the contractor,” Nasasira said.

“We shall even invite those Hoima politicians who have been inciting the masses, to witness the exercise,” he said.

Nasasira said almost 90% of the required paper work had been finalised.

“All that remains is to sign the agreement with the contractors. The World Bank will then release the money,” he said.

He said as soon as the World Bank paid Stirling Civil Engineering Ltd, the contractors, they would move back to the site.

“Otherwise for now, they can’t do anything because their money is still being withheld,” he said.

Nasasira said Stirling, which is constructing the 145-km-Busunju-Kiboga-Hoima Road, is demanding about US$3.5m for the certified work done.

Stirling, which has been waiting for the World Bank money for the last seven months, has since stopped work and even reduced workers at the site.

A World Bank team was recently in Kampala to follow up the road project.
