LIRA district leaders have commended the UPDF for their offensive against the Lord’s Resistance Army rebels.

During a recent security meeting, the leaders cited a recent battle in which the army routed the rebels, creating calm in some areas in the district.

The State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, Okot Ogong, chaired the meeting held in the Lira District Council Hall.

The sub-county chairpersons and security officers from areas affected by the insurgency in the district attended.

The Olilim sub-county chairman said the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers currently deployed in the area were doing very well.

“They attack the rebels in their hideouts in the bush compared to the previous soldiers who would wait for the rebels to strike before responding.” he said.

The Lira Resident District Commissioner, Charles Egou Engwau, said the UPDF were fighting hard partly because they had overwhelming support from the residents.

He said the UPDF were reluctant to fight the LRA rebels in the past because some politicians insulted them over the radio.

“But now it is different. Everybody is working with the soldiers,” he said.

Ogong said the UPDF had intensified their attacks and that the rebels would be wiped out of Lango soon.

He said there was a consensus by all stakeholders to end the 17-year-old war soon.
