THE construction of the long awaited football technical centre in Uganda is set to start this year.
FUFA officials say construction of the $400,000 (sh800m) project is set to start after the world body FIFA approved FUFA’s proposal to have phase II of the Goal Project.
The construction of the FUFA House — the federation’s offices — at Mengo marked Phase I of the Goal Project.
“Plans are underway to have construction starting soon. The paper work has been finalised and that is what makes it hard usually,” said FUFA assistant treasurer Ahmed Wadriff.
“You have to lobby and convince the Goal Bureau. The centre should be ready by mid next year. FIFA appreciated how the grant was used in the first phase and has given us a go ahead for the second phase that will cost $400,000.”
Wadriff added that the federation will lobby for land from government, a move that will offset on expenditures.
Mozambique was the first nation to get the facility. It was among the few countries that have benefited from the second phase of the goal project.
Assistant secretary Zubair Galiwango said that the federation will soon consider a firm to be awarded the construction tender. Zzimwe Constructors built FUFA House.
This is the third biggest assistance FIFA is extending to Uganda after the $250000(sh500) annual grant and $400,000 for the headquarters.
The goal project was initiated in 1999 with a target of assisting 100 national football associations worldwide.
