UNDER-STRENGTH Uganda shrugged off stiff opposition to win a silver medal as the Chase Bank sponsored Kenya table tennis open came to an end at Parklands Ayra Club on Saturday.
Uganda's hope for gold came to naught when they fell 1-3 to Kenya in the final that saw professional Jackson Miggade cry foul after being robbed victory in his game against top Kenyan seed Fahd Daim.
The two had taken two sets apiece before the Kenyan won the fifth and decider 12-10 with umpire penalising Miggade frequently for alleged poor serving.
Jude Mutete won his game against Victor Ouko. The senior four student at Kakungulu Memorial school, Daniel Mutabazi saw inexperience cost him losing to number two seed Anthony Mathenge.
Mutete lost the last set against Daim 0-3 to guarantee Kenya gold.
Mutabazi's brother, Peter, another product of Kakungulu school finished third in the under-14 boys singles with their younger brother, Eriya (Kakungulu) taking fifth spot.
Uganda's duo of Miggade and Mutete lost in the semi finals of the doubles to Daim and Mathenge.
In the boy's singles, Daniel Mutabazi lost in the second round to Kenya's number five seed, Parit Shah.
Ugandan players for the event were Miggade, Mutete, Daniel Mutabazi, Peter Mutabazi and Eriya Mutabazi.
Dungu Badru was the manager.Ends
