BETTY Nambooze yesterday took her bribe case to the political theatre, declaring her intention to stand against prosecution witness and Mukono North MP Peter Bakaluba Mukasa in the 2006 parliamentary elections.

“I told him that come 2006 I am going to stand against him in Mukono North, not Wakiso as he thought. He knows I’m determined to challenge him,” Nambooze said during her defence before a fully packed Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s court.

Nambooze, a Mukono law enforcement officer, was citing to court her defence that the case against her was built on grudges she had with Bakaluba and the complainant, Hannington Kanyike.

“I know they have grudges against me and this is the climax. I want to tell court that I am being maliciously prosecuted. All these charges are fabricated,” Nambooze said.

She said Bakaluba had placed announcements on local FM radios, urging the public not to vote for her if she stood in Wakiso.

She said during the 2001 parliamentary elections, she campaigned for Bakaluba’s rival.

Nambooze also alleged that in 1998, Bakaluba accused her of being a rebel to the NRM Secretariat. But she said the Secretariat cleared her and told her Bakaluba had made the report.
