MPs have called for the scrapping of the office of the Vice-President if the Government cannot fund it.

Members of the parliamentary committee on presidential and foreign affairs made the call yesterday while scrutinising the policy statement of the Office of the President and State House.

The Minister for the Presidency, Kirunda Kivejinja and the State House Comptroller, Richard Muhinda, led the team from the President’s office and State House to the meeting chaired by Salaamu Musumba (Bugabula).

The MPs made the call after learning that the Vice-President’s office was allocated sh1.5b for the 2003/04 fiscal year compared to sh27b given to State House.

State House and the Vice-President’s office are under one budget vote.

“If we need this office, we must be able to fund it. If we can’t, we should scrap it,” chairperson Musumba said.

MPs led by Aggrey Awori (Samia Bugwe North) argued that there was a big disparity in resource allocation to State House and the Vice-President’s office.

The MP said for seven years, the Government had not bought an official residence for the Vice-President, yet funds were expeditiously mobilised to buy an office for the first Lady.
