THE Police in Bugiri have arrested a man allegedly keeping over 30 sacks of marijuana in his house.
An operation mounted by a team of detectives and policemen rounded up Sulaiman Ngolobe Were, 68, at his home in Butema village in Bulugui subcounty on Sunday evening.

A total of 35 sacks of marijuana weighing 922kilogrammes were recovered from Were’s home, the Police said.

However, Were denied ownership of the narcotic drugs. He said the drugs belonged to his friends only identified as Onyango and Ojambo, who reportedly fled to Busia and Kampala respectively.

The district Police commander, Patrick Mugizi, said investigations were continuing. He said sources had told him Were, also a charcoal seller, was a long-time narcotics dealer.

Sources said several peasants in Bulugui subcounty grow marijuana to export to Kenya.

The drug inspector, Lawrence Ofwono, said a number of people had been arrested for drug trafficking in the district.
