LOCAL machinery manufacturers want the Government to ban the importation of machinery that can be locally made.

“Our business is doing quiet well because of the many investors present. There are so many new companies coming up and we are doing repair works for their machinery. Importation of machinery which we can fabricate here in Uganda should be stopped by government,” Gupreet Sagoo, the Pioneer Engineering Works partner said on Wednesday.

He was speaking during the Ntinda factory tour by the Vice President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya.

The four-year old factory manufactures cotton bailing presses, does steel fabrication and repairs of heavy machinery.
It also makes spare parts of double roller grinning machines.
Bukenya said Uganda needed rural industrialisation to hasten economic development.

“If Uganda must develop fast, we must rush for rural industrialisation. In order for this to work we need to avail our people with simple and affordable machines locally made,” Bukenya said.

“This is why companies like Pioneer Engineering Works which is duplicating and making machines that would otherwise be more expensive when bought abroad, are important to us,” he added.

Bukenya was impressed by the brick-making machine.
He said the rural business community would find it useful because of its high production capacity and efficiency.
