SIR — I would like to come to the defence of the British High Commission regarding the alleged difficulty in getting a visa to the United Kingdom. It is not true that it is difficult to get a visa. I recently visited their office in order to get a visa for my daughter who was due to travel with my sister for a holiday in Newbury, south London.

I had all her papers ready for the officer on duty and all evidence indicated that she was not an intending migrant. So she was easily given a visa! I also observed that most applicants who came in that day were interviewed and even allowed to go out and get more evidence if required. This is contrary to the past where you had to make another payment before being re-interviewed. So there is no need to line up as early as 5.00pm for a visa. That day, the kanyamas (people who book places for other people by lining up as early as 4.00am), were also arrested by police. I therefore insist that the British visa office is doing a good job!
