THE economic value of the losses incurred by Uganda since the Kony war broke out 17 years ago in Northern Uganda is about $1.3b.
“That is to say, every year we lose about 3% of the Gross Domestic Product,” said the Italian Ambassador Maurizio Teucci (pictured) in an interview with The New Vision recently.
He added: “But a part from the economic cost, if we are to estimate the productive people who died in the war is more or less 50,000 people.”
Teucci said the Italian government, which is one of the key donors to Uganda, was interested in helping Uganda find a political solution to the conflict.
He said this would enable the war-torn region to catch up with other parts of the country in terms of development.
“In order to find the solution to the conflict, every possibility must be exploited. The Italian government fully commends activities done by the Acholi Religious Peace Initiatives,” said the envoy.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese ambassador Sirajuddin Hamid Yousuf, said a purely military approach might not end the war because the rebels use the hit-and-run guerrilla tactic, which he said was elusive.Ends
