MEMBERS of parliament from Mayuge district, opinion leaders and local government officials have completed discussing a memorandum on the district status to be presented to the Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya.

The acting chairperson, Nalongo Sajjabi, led the discussions on Friday at the district headquarters.

A select committee drafted the memorandum in which the central government is advised on the way forward for Mayuge.

Deborah Wamala, the assistant resident district commissioner, was chosen to present the memorandum to the VP.

The select committee comprised Bunya West MP Wilberforce Kiwagama, former Bunya west MP Abdulatif Wangubo, Rashid Kimera, P. Tubone and Mrs T. Kimbowa.

MPs in attendance included Tom Bagalana (Bunya south), James Kubeketerya (Bunya east) and Lukia Isanga Nakadama (woman MP).

The leaders agreed to work towards unity and reconciliation in the district. They resolved that 45 elders from the warring parties would participate in the reconciliation talks.
The district has been embroiled in political bickering since its inception almost two years ago.

Kimera, the councillor for Kityerera sub-county, said the main conflict revolves around cliques for or against the district chairman, Baker Ikoba Tigawalana.

Ikoba is on remand at Kirinya Prison, Jinja over murdering a political rival.
