UGANDAN Duncan Mugabe went down fighting against Burundian Elvis Herimenshi in the toughest match of the ITF/CAT 13 and under East African circuit at Lugogo club yesterday.
With one set each, Mugabe came within two games of making the semifinals but Herimenshi recovered to defeat the Ugandan 6-3 6-7(8) 7-5 (5) after two and a half hours.
“Duncan is good. If he had controlled himself he would have won,” Herimenshi said. At one point, his coach halted play protesting the partisan home support Mugabe enjoyed.
The day however ended badly for the Burundian when Ethiopian Chico Zerlhuni destroyed him 6-0 6-0 to reach the final.
Zerlhuni will face compatriot Mesfin Geladious, who got a walkover after Ugandan Jorum Obita was forced out by a bout of Malaria.
Obita had easily defeated Rwanda’s Cekina Niyoshuti 6-1 6-1 to get to the semifinal.
