KAMPALA — Uganda is fully committed to the process of tobacco control and is taking the necessary steps to ratify and implement the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control by September. Health minister Brig. Jim Muhwezi recently told participants at a health forum that Uganda had made tremendous progress in dealing with many health problems, although tobacco control still needed attention.

LCs defend graduated tax
KAMPALA — District heads recently put up a spirited fight in defence of the graduated tax against a joint resolve by MPs to push for its abolition. district heads and officials who spoke at a consultative seminar on the abolition of the tax said it was a boon for local governments, while MPs said it was a colonial relic and a menace to peasants.

Mengo plans museum
KAMPALA — Mengo is negotiating with Kenyan-registered AFRICOM, a non-governmental organisation, to establish the Buganda kingdom museum. A former a residential area for Kabaka’s officials (abakungu) near Kisenyi has been earmarked for the museum, the kingdom tourism and historical sites, engineer Hubert Kibuuka, said recently.

Govt warns contractors
Bushenyi — The ministry of education is to summon school building contractors over School Facilitation Grant classrooms and the shoddy work done by some of them. The state minister for primary education, Namirembe Bitamazire, threatened to imprison councillors and engineers over poor work done using government funds. She was inspecting schools at the weekend.
