The South African tourist who had been trapped by a boulder on the Ruwenzoris for about four days has been rescued.

Matthias Mugisha and John Thawite report that a South Afican colonel in charge of the rescue operation, Smiley J. van Zyl, said late last night that David Land and his Ugandan escorts were safe. He said the rescue helicopter first flew to Bunia in eastern DRC to refuel and may fly to Entebbe today where an air ambulance from Europ Assistance, Land’s insurers, is waiting to fly him out.

Land and two escorts, one identified as Raphael Katseghe, were caught some 14,000ft on Sunday by an avalanche. He was able to communicate by walkie-talkie with the multinational military rescuer team after locals brought him to a lower altitude.
