There are many local day-old chicks producers in this country and these include Ugachick Poultry Breeders, Bokomo Uganda Limited, Kigo Prisons Farm, Kagodo Farmers. I believe these have a good potential to flood this market with good-quality chicks. This whole rush about importation of chicks is most probably an indoctrination of the Ugandans’ mind that anything local is bad and everything foreign is good.

About Dr Kisamba Mugerwa’s search for an entrepreneur or scientists to produce day-old chicks, I think this to be a wrong approach. What actually needs to be done is to look at improving the existing hatcheries/breeder farmers by looking at how they can achieve maximum chick production. Give them soft loans, help them expand their programmes and give them technical exposure through training.
