THE Acholi want the Government to supply food to everyone in the war-ravaged sub-region.

The request was made by callers during a phone-in talk-show on Mega 102 FM on Sunday morning.

Callers said the Government should introduce a programme of universal food distribution to the region, especially in the districts of Gulu, Kitgum and Pader where about 80 percent of the people have been displaced.

They appealed to the World Food Programme (WFP) to supply food to all the people of Acholi.

“All the people of Acholi are faced with food scarcity whether in the camps or not. Therefore, we appeal to the Government and WFP to supply food to all the people,” a caller said.

The talk-show was started by Kalangala Action Plan (KAP) in Gulu. It is known in Luo as ‘Kabake’.

KAP has collected people’s views on food distribution and other issues in the region.

WFP assistant programme manager in Gulu, Fred Olaa, said the food was meant for needy people.

“It is true that the people of northern Uganda, especially the Acholi. are experiencing food shortages due to the war, but WFP cannot supply food to all the people universally like that.

“We may not have the capacity. That is why we supply food to only the needy,” Olaa said.

He said the WFP would soon start a programme on Radio Mega to sensitise the entire community about its activities.

The Deputy Resident District Commissioner for Gulu, Semei Okwir, said the Government was doing its best to assist the people of Acholi.
