An Indian NGO, the World Malayalee Council (WMC) has started a rural development project in Kamwenge district to help the poor improve their health, education and agriculture, writes Vision Reporter.

The pilot project recently launched in Kibaale sub-county is expected to benefit about 150,000 people.

The project, code-named the Village Adoption scheme will also promote small-scale industries in selected villages.

The WMC Africa region president, Jacob John Poovathoor, said the project is sponsored by Uganda telecom Ltd.

WMC global president Andrew Pappachen laid the foundation stone for two maternity and pediatrics wards for Kabuga health centre during the launching of the project last month.

WMC also donated drugs to the only health centre in the district.

Poovathoor cautioned the people against misuse of the projects.

He said the Malayalee project was to be carried out in phases.

He said the first phase will focus on constructing additional wards for the maternity and pediatrics wards with capacity of 12 to 24 beds, respectively.
