HAMZA Saleh top scored with 38 runs and picked up four wickets as Busoga College Mwiri recaptured the coveted Coca-Cola schools cricket title yesterday.
Mwiri got back the national trophy by beating defending champions Jinja SSS by 58 runs in the final at Lugogo oval.
Saleh led with the bat and ball to lead Mwiri to a title that had eluded them for two years.
Man-of-the-match Saleh struck 38 runs off 35 balls and inspired his partner Hilary Mabike (30) with series of rasping shots as the pair raced to a 67 run stand.
Captain Dennis Musali (23) joined in, spreading balls in all directions as his side raced to 100 runs in 20 overs, before setting Jinja SSS 138 to win in 25 overs.
Defeat loomed for Jinja SSS in the first ten overs when they lost three vital wickets including talisman Arthur Kyobe (4).
Heroics from Mwiri bowlers Saleh (4/13), Timothy Bbuye (2/20) and Davis Arinaitwe (1/20) created panic in the Jinja side, with Mwiri getting three run-outs and five catches
Issanez led a fight back with 33 runs, but Jinja were eventually all out at 79 runs with 3.1 overs to play.
“ Our strategies worked at all levels. We played as a team and kept our heads cool,” captain Musali said. He hailed Kenneth Kamyuka and Frank Nsubuga, who assisted coach them.
Today, the schools select XI will take on a Chairman’s XI at Lugogo oval at 9.00am. The prize ceremony will follow.
