JOHANNESBURG- Egypt’s Al Ahli, the most successful side in African club competition history, suffered a stunning 4-0 defeat to Enugu Rangers of Nigeria in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Cup at the weekend.
Holders JS Kabylie of Algeria were also in danger of elimination at the quarter-final stage after failing to score at home in the first leg of their tie against Cotonsport of Cameroon on Sunday.
A goalless draw leaves JSK, chasing an unprecedented fourth successive trophy, in a precarious position with the return leg to come in Garoua later this month.
Al Ahli’s 4-0 defeat in Nigeria on Saturday was the heaviest suffered by the club in three decades of participation in African club competition.
Named African club of the century in 2000, Al Ahli have been criticised in the Egyptian press after the loss, which threatens the future of their Portuguese coach Toni, hired a month ago.
Tunisia’s Club Africain had fired their Turkish coach Muhsin Ertugral days before Saturday's quarter-final first leg against Green Buffaloes of Zambia but showed no ill effects with a 4-1 win.
