TWO league defeats to KCC played a significant part in wrecking KCC’s championship hopes but a Kakungulu Cup win over Express will more than be a consolation.

As both sides clash in the tournament’s first semi final, first leg, each will hope to obtain a crucial psychological advantage that could well shape the outcome of the return leg at Wankulukuku on Monday.

The season has not been one to remember at Lugogo, but KCC believes a startling finish in the country’s second prestigious tournament will provide justified consolation for yet another faltered league campaign.

Whenever the two meet, the occasion is enormous, even when the matches themselves have not been epics. Yet mostly they are.

The winner of the two legs will undoubtedly be a favourite for the trophy, the very fact that both clubs have won it a record joint seven times.

KCC’s task appears a tall order with the absence of left winger Alimasi Kadogo, defender Tom Muwonge and first choice custodian Patrick Ogwang but Abbey Nasur, being the optimist he is, believes his charges will be indomitable.

“The spirit is high among the players and we will give this game the best we can in appreciation for the support the fans have rendered us this season,” said club tactician Nassur.

The club’s performances of late have seen goals come in plenty, with Henry Kabeta revelling up front.

Kabeta, who saved KCC from a possible upset in Masaka in this very tournament, will no wonder, be the most feared player at kickoff.

Express tactician Jan Fray acknowledges only too well that the absence of six of his regular starters in Abedi Bironse, Toto Songe, Fred Okello, Baby Matiyabo, Francis Onyango and Peter Rwebuga will deprive his side of the desired quality.

Bana Zidane, effective as a playmaker, will return in the same role just behind lead striker Hassan Mubiru.

Cup holders SC Villa and Express joined KCC in the semi finals of the tournament after trouncing Top TV 3-0 and Kinyara 4-0 on aggregate in the quarterfinal stages respectively.

Meanwhile, Police FC squeezed through to the semi finals of the Kakungulu Cup tournament after ejecting army side Simba SC in a penalty shoot out yesterday at Nakivubo stadium.

Simba’s industrious performance on the day, that had them over turning their first leg 1-0 loss, with a first half strike that levelled the aggregate score 1-all, had two vital misses from Sam Senoga and Robert Kabanda, that subsequently had them ejected 2-4.

Midfielder Richard Okii was Police FC’s villain after his penalty kick was saved.

Police FC’s qualification into the semifinals hands cup holders Villa the least desired kind of opposition for a two leg showdown at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole starting Saturday.
