CANDIDATES short-listed for the position of Makerere University Vice-Chancellor will be subjected to public presentations in an unprecedented move to ensure transparency in filling the university’s top post.

The university secretary, Sam Byanagwa, confirmed this on Sunday, adding that the successful candidates had been short-listed and interviews would take place next week.
“Towards the end of the week, we shall be inviting the public for presentations by the candidates. The press is also invited,” Byanagwa said but declined to reveal the names of candidates, saying ‘the university should first be allowed to do its job.’

Other sources said four candidates had been invited for interviews by the vice-chancellor’s search committee headed by Dr. Wana Etyem, the former chairman of the Uganda National Examinations Board.

They include Prof. Elly Katunguka, the dean faculty of veterinary medicine, Prof. Opuda Asibo, the director school of postgraduate studies, Prof. Oswald Ndoleriire, former dean faculty of arts and Prof. Mary Okwakol, the deputy vice-chancellor of Gulu University.

The Principal Makerere University Business School, Wasswa Balunywa, was not short-listed. He described the selection procedure as unfair.
