KAMPALA City Council (KCC) has ordered residents who have encroached on the Nakivubo Channel wetlands to vacate it within 21 days.

The directive issued on Friday by Town Clerk Gordon Mwesigye goes to all people residing and conducting business in the wetlands.

In a statement, Mwesigye said the Nakivubo swamp filters water from the Nakivubo Channel before entering Lake Victoria.

Mwesigye said people have encroached on the swamp by residing and carrying out other activities thereby reducing its filtration efficiency.

He said due to the need to protect Lake Victoria, which is Kampala’s only economical fresh water source, the Nakivubo Channel Rehabilitation Project took on an additional task to conserve the swamp.

He said with the drainage water not being collected more efficiently from the city, the demand for its purification by the swamp is now much bigger than before.

China Civil Engineering and Construction Corporation is refurbishing the 9km channel at sh17b provided by the World Bank.

Earlier, city secretary for works hajji Amis Kaggwa said the people operating on the just finished bridges over the channel would also be evicted.
