THE Ministry of Health yesterday launched a countrywide programme aimed at fighting malaria through the use of Insecticide Treated Mosquito Nets (ITN).

NetMark, an international organisation operating in six African countries, will handle the work in collaboration with four local commercial companies for the next three years.

The six-nation project is sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and will cost $65.4m.

Launching the campaign yesterday at the International Conference Centre in Kampala, Capt. Mike Mukula, state minister for health, said the Government plans to have 80% usage of ITN in malaria endemic areas of the country.

“Government put a tax waiver on ITN in order to make them affordable to everybody.
We want the treated mosquito nets to go for as low as sh5,000. That’s why we are appealing to the politicians to get on board,” Mukula said. Dr. Will Shaw, the deputy director of NetMark, said his organisation will educate the public on the dangers of malaria.
