THE baseball and softball teams were confirmed on the Ugandan contingent travelling to Abuja for the All Africa Games next week, but the weightlifters have been kicked out.
The curtain was drawn on the weightlifters, who handed in their application to be included on the games contingent, late.
“The accreditation is over and we can not consider them. Even if we were to do so, they are privately sponsored but have not yet got a sponsor,” said NCS acting general secretary John Odyek.
Yesterday, the Africa baseball and softball body confirmed to National Council of sports (NCS) that they will fully cater for the men’s baseball and women’s softball team.
“We have received a communication and we are confirming their accreditation,” said Justin Ligyalingi, who is Chief de mission of the team.
The athletics camp looked calm, save for the continued absence of Margaret Nakintu, who has been entered for the 800m and 1500m.
In boxing, Jolly Katongole was on the brink of being scrapped off the list due to his poor performance.
However, council rejected the proposed replacement of Gerald Aliga, who has been training with the Bombers team, since he was not part of the reserves sent to the organisers.
Athletics and boxing are the only two disciplines that will be sponsored by the government for the games due October 4-18.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ronald Kisolo was named team manager of the national team to the All Africa Games. The team is tentatively set to depart September 30.
Kisolo, who has escorted different teams to international games before, will also double as team doctor. “We have a small contingent and we need to keep down the number of officials set to travel,” said John Odyek.
In another development, the All Africa Games doping boss Dr. James Sekajugo will debrief his countrymen at 5.00pm today.
