CAPTAIN Fred James Okello (right), the man fighting it out with environment minister Kahinda Otafiire over a timber scam, was yesterday freed on Police bond.

Okello, the former head of the timber monitoring unit, was picked up from the Central Police Station where he was being held at 11:20am and transferred to the CID headquarters where he was freed.

At 12:25pm the permanent secretary in the gender ministry, Ralph Ochan, his uncle and surety, pulled up in a sleek white Toyota Land Cruiser, UG 0167Y, and dashed to an office. He emerged 20 minutes later with a beaming and smartly dressed Okello, who was flanked by his wife Constance Nagudi and his lawyer, Gloria Basaza Ochieng of Oulanyah, Onori and advocates.

“It feels good to be a free man once again,” said Okello, who was dressed in a light-blue long-sleeved shirt, checked trousers and shining black shoes. He had a copy of The New Vision and a bottle of mineral water.

“My client says no comment,” she chipped in. She said no charges had been preferred against Okello.
“He is a free man though he will have to continue appearing at the CID headquarters till further notice,” she said.

“We are observing his constitutional right to liberty and he has the right to defend himself,”she said.
