THE African Human Rights summit has proposed that human rights organisations should advocate for constitutional reforms to ensure democratic transitions in Africa, reports Mariam Nalunkuuma.
The director of National Endowment for democracy, Learned Dees, said this recently at the closing of the summit held at Grand Imperial Hotel in Kampala.
The activists agreed to develop strategies for the protection of human rights defenders especially those working in conflict situations.
Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI)director Livingstone Ssewanyana urged African states to ratify the optional protocol establishing an African court on Human rights.
“The court will interpret the necessary human rights standards that guarantee respect for the norms and values agreed upon by the international human rights system,” Ssewanyana said.
The summit organised by FHRI attracted international human rights organisations aimed at enlisting development partners in efforts of democratising Africa.
