SHE is in town, radiating with life and promising Kampala a good time this weekend.
South African pop star Yvonne Chaka Chaka is here to attend the inaugural Pearl of Africa Music Awards (PAM) today at the Speke Resort Munyonyo.
Chaka Chaka plane touched down at Entebbe International Airport at 11:00pm on Wednesday night from Cape Town aboard Kenya Airways.
Flanked by her unidentified daughter and her manager Kagiso Gabobsele and Kenya Airways country chief Jimmy Kibati, Chaka Chaka left the arrival lounge to a warm welcome from PAM chairman Isaac Mulindwa and an army of local journalists.
Speaking to cheerful journalists at a press conference held on Thursday morning at the Speke Hotel, Kampala, the diva and mother of four expressed her pleasure at being invited to attend the inaugural music awards.
“When I was invited to attend the PAM Awards, I was delighted. It is something related to music, and being a musician and Uganda being country I love, I thought I should come and give the Awards a flavour,” said the singer.
Twenty-three musicians out of 93 artists nominated in various categories will walk away with a PAM award that night. The feat will be spiced by Uganda’s popular artistes like Gerald Kiwewa, Bebe Cool and Chameleon (right).
Chaka Chaka said Africa had got great musicians but the problem was with the local media who did not give them the write-ups and respect they deserved. “Charity begins at home so it is you the local media that should give the local artistes the exposure they deserve. Any country without art is doomed,” she said.
Asked why she has seemingly been out of action for a while, Chaka Chaka said, “I stopped some of my records coming this way because of piracy.”
