TWO former National Drug Authority (NDA) chiefs, the chairman and the executive secretary, ordered for the importation of fake anti-malarial drugs into the country, court heard yesterday.
Atanasius K. Kakwemeire, the head of the NDA quality control laboratory, said Dr. William Nganwa and Dr. John Lule ordered for the purchase of anti-malarial drugs from Ningbor No.2 Pharmaceutical factory, an internationally condemned factory. He said the drugs did not have the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) as required by drug manufacturing plants.
“NDA top officials allowed the importation of the drugs from Ningbor yet it did not have the GMP certificate as per the inspection and recommendations made by Dr. Nganwa and Dr. Lule.
“The test is a compulsory requirement for all drug-producing factories and despite the fact that the two chiefs inspected the factory and recommended that drugs from the factory should not be allowed into the country, they went ahead and authorised the importation,” Kakwemeire said.
Nganwa, Lule and Francis Otim, the head of registration department, are on trial at the Buganda Road Court.
