KAMPALA City Council (KCC) has extended Uganda Taxi Operators and Drivers Association’s (UTODA) contract to manage taxi parks for another two years, the Mayor, John Ssebaana Kizito, has said.

Ssebaana told The New Vision the extension started on October 1. The contract expired on September 30.

“They have started on their extension term. The company has paid up all our money and that of Uganda Revenue Authority,” he said.

Ssebaana said KCC would not sign a new contract with UTODA because the tender was extended and not renewed.

The district council on August 23 agreed to extend UTODA’s contract for another two years if it cleared its debt with KCC and URA.

UTODA has been paying sh260m per month to manage taxi operations in the city. Ssebaana said a new rate was yet to be determined after a fresh count of vehicles was done.

However, the Solicitor General, Lucien Tibaruha, in a September 5 letter to Town Clerk Gordon Mwesigye, said the contract to manage the New and Old Taxi Parks should be re-tendered as per the 2000 High Court order between Kampala Central Division and KCC.

The letter was copied to the Local Government Permanent Secretary, the URA Commissioner General and the mayor.

But Ssebaana said the issue between the Central Division and KCC was settled out of court.
