MADHVANI Group of Companies has emerged as the best overall exhibitor at the ongoing Uganda International Trade Fair (UGTIF) 2003, at Lugogo.

The non-monetary award includes two shields, of which one is to be returned after a year.

The best foreign exhibitor award went to Kenyan-based Bidco Oil Refineries Limited, while the best exhibitor in the small scale category was Master Wood Works Limited.

President Yoweri Museveni handed over the awards. In the school quiz contest, which UMA organised in tandem with the show, Uganda Martyrs SSS, Namugongo, emerged the winner. Kings College Buddo came second. Bishop SSS Mukono came third, followed by Gayaza High School.

All the four schools walked away with prizes from the participating firms, and a handshake from Museveni.

While announcing the winners, Hilary Obonyo, the UMA executive director, said participation in the show has been growing over the years, becoming a main meeting point for hundreds of reputable manufacturers from around the world.

Meanwhile, thousands of people flocked the Lugogo show grounds on the Indepedence Day holiday Thursday and jammed the colourful exhibition stalls.

UMA information director, Sam Apedel, said attendance is higher than of that of last year.

“This big number of attendance gives a chance to the consumers and the manufacturers to have market interaction,” he said on Thursday.

The Crown Beverages marketing manager, Dan Muchiri said, “There are signs that it is going to pick up in style during the weekend. The exhibition is covering all sectors of the economy so everybody will benefit.”

Most of the restaurants at Lugogo were filled to capacity, notably Uhuru, which had two long lines of hungry people wanting to have at least a meal.
