THE New Vision is organising a contest in which primary school children will design adverts. The ‘Design An Ad.’ Contest in which children will get a chance to create and design their own adverts for different advertisers starts October 18 to November 29. Among the participating companies are Colgate, Shell, Bata Shoe Company, MTN and many others.
“Teachers should actively take up the exercise as a teaching exercise because it encourages creativity and improves visual skills,” says Barbara Kaija, The New Vision Features Editor.
“The teachers can encourage children to design different adverts as class or homework exercises for practice, but when it comes to the final contest, pupils must design the adverts on their own,” she adds.
The pupils’ work must be original and creative because advertisers love creativity and any copied work will therefore be disqualified. All primary school pupils all over the country are encouraged to participate and all they need to do is to cut out a coupon from the New Vision and attach it to the drawing. The coupons will be in the papers every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The pupils are free to design more than one ad for the same advertiser, but they will have to attach a fresh coupon all the time. Every pupil whose advert will be published will win sh50,000. At the end of the contest the best advert will win sh500,000, the second sh300,000 while the third person will get sh200,000.
The children should draw a box measuring 17cm long and 13cm wide on white photocopying paper and draw their final advert in the box. The measurements of the box have to be exact. Pupils must paint their drawings with markers or water paint. It is only if they cannot absolutely afford it that they may use coloured pencils. If they are designing a black and white advert, they should draw it using black ink or a black pen. They should not use pencils. Teachers are encouraged to ensure that their pupils submit their adverts at the earliest opportunity possible to enable them qualify for the weekly draws. The weekly winning adverts will begin on October 25 to November 29. All entries must be submitted to the Children’s Editor, The New Vision, P.O.Box 9815, Kampala, Third Street Industrial Area. The envelopes must be clearly labelled ‘Design An Ad Contest.’ For upcountry pupils, you can take your entries to the New Vision upcountry offices in Mbarara, Lira, Soroti, Jinja, Mbale, Masaka and FortPortal.
